Certainly one of the all-time great recordings of Brahms' Double Concerto is coupled with surely one of the better recordings of Brahms' Symphony No. 2 on this, the 31st disc in Supraphon's Karel Ancerl Gold Edition. Certainly one of the all-time great recordings of Brahms' Double Concerto is coupled with surely one of the better recordings of Brahms' Symphony No. 2 on this, the 31st disc in Supraphon's Karel Ancerl Gold Edition. Ancerl was certainly one of the better conductors of the postwar years and surely one of the two or three great Czech conductors of the twentieth century. In these recordings from the '60s, Ancerl is at his peak: graceful, lyrical, expressive, and often very, very powerful. This is the digital update of an old, but high quality LP recording. Karl Ancerl conducts the Check Philharmonic outstandingly; he is comparable to Bernstein (in the Kremer-Maisky, Vienna Philharmonic performance). Josef Suk is fine, Andre Navarra is somewhat "low voice". At the time of this recording he was already aged, and he died a few years thereafter. Overall, I believe that this an outstanding performance, which should be in the Musiklieber's collection, along with the Oistach-Rostropovich-Karajan and Henryk Szeryng-Janos Starker - Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - Bernard Haitink recordings.
