In the 1990s, quite a few bands proudly flew both the stoner metal and doom metal flags. And just what is the difference between the two genres, you ask? The answer is...not exactly a whole lot, as bands from both genres often worshiped Black Sabbath, as evidenced by the riff-heavy music and the fact that lyric-wise, each tended to be very similar to two specific Sab songs -- "Hand of Doom" (for doom metal) and "Sweet Leaf" (for stoner metal). And England's Orange Goblin seemed to pledge their allegiance to both metal subgenres. Formed in 1995, the band issued five albums during an eight-year period -- 1997's Frequencies from Planet Ten, 1998's Time Travelling Blues, 2000's The Big Black, 2002's Coup de Grace, and 2004's Thieving from the House of God. And in 2011, all five of these albums were reissued and expanded as part of a five-disc, self-titled box set. Of the newly added bonus cuts, you'll find quite a few cover tunes, including Black Sabbath's "Into the Void" (what a surprise!) as well as Motörhead's "No Class" and the Damned's "New Rose," among other covers, demos, and live BBC recordings. And as heard on such standout tracks as "Saruman's Wish," "Blue Snow," "Scorpionica," and "Some You Win, Some You Lose," Orange Goblin were certainly capable of penning their own metallic ass-kickers. All the Orange Goblin you could ever want is lurking inside this neatly assembled box set. The only thing that's missing is a lava lamp and incense. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
