Among the footnotes in this first volume you will find reference to Harold Kauffman's Investigations, a work that includes the co-evolutionary NK formula that becomes central to our studies by volumes 4 and 5. In this volume we begin a process that takes us where the facts and data lead. We are fortunate to conduct our discovery both in mathematics and semantics, in several sciences, "hard" and "soft." It is the ability of the authors to dialog between themselves and with peers in various disciplines that brings vitality to the subject. Along the way Richard Dawkins pointed out that ideas that replicate themselves in our brains, passing from brain to brain, will help our species reproduce as much as physical genes. In his book The Selfish Gene he coined the term "meme" for such cultural replicators. We think "the invisible hand" and "the Demon" are just such memes.
