Bound by Iron by Edward Bolme had promise of being an interesting tale of an aging Karrn Paladin by the name of Cimozjen and a youthful Elvin maiden named Minrah, a self proclaimed "Bard of the Pen".
The tale starts off in Korth, the capital city of Karrnath, as Cimozjen interrupts a thug from robbing a young girl of a basket of food. The author took way too much time trying to develop the victim's character prior to the mugging, to what would eventually be a character who played no future important part in the main story what so ever.
Through out the entire book, it almost seemed like the author was trying to figure out which way the story was heading, and who the supporting characters were going to be. I have to say that the character development did get a little better towards the middle and end of the book.
It was unfortunate that from the beginning to the end, it was very predictable. I stuck with it because I was hoping there was going to be some strange twist that would throw me for a loop, but unfortunately, it proved to be unfruitful.
If you are looking for a good investigative mystery, keep looking. This one was very predictable and had inconsistent character development. Perhaps his next book in the Inquisitives series will be better.
