Boris at Last -Feedbacker- is a continuous 44-minute composition by the uncategorizable Japanese group, encompassing a vast array of styles and emotions within its five movements. Starting out as a very still drift and adding piercing waves of guitar feedback, a trudging drumbeat emerges, while dubby delay effects are gradually applied, causing everything to appear to slowly expand outward. When the lead guitar is pulled out for an epic solo, it feels like the beginning of an earthquake, and following a passage of sorrowful vocals by double-necked bassist/guitarist Takeshi, the trio launch into the most rhythmically involved section of the piece, tapping into their hungrier, more vicious side. Part four, however, is a total supernova. All of the pent-up agony and frustration is released in a nuclear blast, with overdriven, bashed-out drums and scouring guitars hurtling outwards into deep space. It's disorienting, rapturous, euphoric, and soul-replenishing all at once. Without question, one of the band's most powerful, devastating releases. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
