Bodycheck presents two illustrious artists of the late twentieth century who, in an era dominated by abstract painting and nascent political correctness, ventured to spotlight the human body (primarily their own) in their artistic work. Both staged the female and male body in a grotesque manner, theatrically dramatizing the torso, limbs, and head. Maria Lassnig (19192014) articulated this humorous, distorted discourse as means of expression fraught with self-irony and also as a feminist weapon. The works of Martin Kippenberger (19531997) are saturated by an enigmatic spirit of the grotesque, in which comical touches and dark humor evoke the painful. Lassnig and Kippenberger never met, but the kinship between the two artists is deeply striking. This thought-provoking exhibition catalog brings the two exceptional artists figurative work together for the first time, shedding new light on their work while revealing the entrenched gender-specific roles in international art at the end of the twentieth century. Bodycheck is an exhibition at the Museion Bolzano, Italy ( 2018).
