TITLE: Body Double
GENRE: Dramatic detective thriller
CAST: Craig Wasson, melanie Griffin, Deborah Shelton, Gregg Henry, Dennis Franz, Guy Boyd and many cameos from the blue movie industry
PLOT: An out of work actor witnesses a murder while being a Peeping Tom. That fact complicates his innocence with the police. While drowning his sorrows and escaping into a blue movie, he notices that an actress performed the same exact routine he had been peeping at. In tracking down the actress, he tracks down the killer.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 9 of 10; The director, a real pro, Brian DePalma, pitched this movie as being the first to show true sex acts and not Hollywood fakery. The studio didn't let him but he did mix a porn flick filming scene into the plot development and used a few noted porn stars as extras. He also maybe the first to include as a side project a complete music video as a plot ploy as part of the same film scene but it has Frankie Goes To Hollywood singing and performing "Relax". The cinematography excells especially in the scenes in the Beverly Hills Mall and at Long Beach.
DVD BONUS: none in my edition but there is a newer version out but I could not find feature data on that copy.
ADDED NOTES: Shelton, a former pageant winner and Playboy covergirl has her voice dubbed in the few lines her character gets to speak. Was Griffin method acting? And the editing cuts while the peeping is going on made me feel a little bit guilty for watching, it involves the viewer so well.
