Even at the turn of the century, the corpus of recordings of music by Luigi Boccherini tended to focus on a few Spanish-flavored favorites that came down from times past. That situation began to change, and this 2020 release from the historical-performance group Les Ombres has added some intriguing pieces to the repertory of available works. The "Une nuit à Madrid" title refers to the idea that these pieces might have been played at a soirée organized by one of Boccherini's employers in the 1780s, and the selections get at the diversity and vigor that makes this composer so intriguing. Boccherini did much to create the string chamber genres heard here, but by the 1780s, he was well aware of the progressive trends in the music of Haydn and had adapted his style accordingly; consider the fresh solutions accomplished in each of the minuets here.
