The Dukes of Dixieland were one of the top trad bands of the 1950's and 60's, particularly in the early 1960's. The Dukes of Dixieland were one of the top trad bands of the 1950's and 60's, particularly in the early 1960's. With trumpeter Frank Assunto, trombonist Fred Assunto and clarinetist Jerry Fuller as their frontline, they made for a particularly exciting group. Unfortunately both of the Assuntos died fairly young from cancer and by the mid-1970's the Dukes were history. However a few years later the title was used for a new and otherwise unrelated dixieland band that has continued to the present day; they really should have used a different name instead of bragging that they have been around since 1949. The current day Dukes are not quite on the same level as the earlier group but are enjoyable in their own right, with spirited soloists in trumpeter Kevin Clark, clarinetist Tim Laughlin and trombonist Ben Smith. For this tribute CD to Bob Crosby's Bobcats, tenor- saxophonist Tom Fischer and clarinetist Jack Maheu were added to some numbers. There are some fine performances, particularly "Washington & Lee Swing" (at least before the corny ending), Maheu's feature on "My Inspiration," an uptempo "Farewell Blues" and "Who's Sorry Now," but far too many of the ensembles are arranged (the Bobcats were much more freewheeling), an awkward version of "March Of The Bob Cats" partly shifts to "1919 Rag" for no real reason, and some of the piano features are slapdash. However dixieland fans will probably enjoy this set overall. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
