Doug MacDonald has been a fixture in the Los Angeles area since 1983. The boppish guitarist has an appealing tone, a relaxed improvising style, and the ability to swing at every tempo. On his seventh album as a leader, MacDonald performs straight-ahead jazz with pianist Art Hillery, bassist John Heard, and the late drummer Johnny Kirkwood. The music includes six standards (highlighted by "Bluesology," "So Danco Samba," and "I Thought About You") and originals by Blue Mitchell ("Blue Capers"), Hillery, MacDonald, Dodge Bolton, and Harry "Sweets" Edison ("A Little Tutu"). Each musician plays at the level that one would expect and, although the results are somewhat predictable, it is predictable excellence at a high level from a quartet of top-notch players. Easily recommended to bebop fans. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
