I was first introduced to this book in my High School American History class (Effingham, Il). As I read it, I began to realize the tales my father told us about his childhood in Franklin County were not "tales" at all but that he had toned them down for us.
We hear about what went on in the cities and tend to think the "rubes" in the country were milking the cows, feeding the chickens and tending their business. They did all that, but quite often with a gun in one hand.
If you are interested in a little visited segment of American history, but one that gives a real insight into what was going on in the "boonies" in the early years of the 20th Century, Bloody Williamson is a good read.
