Like so many happy accidents, my husband accidentally picked up The Wolf Age by James Enge and brought it home. He decided to read it since he wasn't going back to the library for a week, and boy are we glad he did! Where has Enge been all our lives? He is THE most innovative author we've ever read in ANY genre. He takes tried and true subject material (i.e., magic, royal intrigue, the merlin legend) and makes it so new I felt as if I was being introduced to these themes for the first time. We were hooked after that and ordered every book by Enge immediately and have not been disappointed. The Blood of Ambrose, his first novel, introduces us to the Morlock, a wizard who prefers to be called a Maker. Up until meeting Morlock, my favorite overall fictional character was Roland from the Gunslinger novels by Stephen King. Well, move over Roland, cuz I think you've met your match. The flawed hero is at his best in Morlock. I cant adequately describe Enge's writing with my pathetic voabulary. I've tried to tell other people about him and just come up short - he is unlike any writer I've read and leaves me hungry for more, more, more... His books will keep you up all night and sneaking off on your breaks at work to speed read just a few more pages. Give Enge is shot. You will not be disappointed.
