He lived there and in Baku during his childhood before fleeing the Bolsheviks in 1920 at the age of 14. Author was the subject of the fascinating book by Tom Reiss titled "The Orientalist.". This book covers the very early 1900s through and past the Bolshevik revolution. I just finished reading it and was sorry it had to end. If you want to have a back ground understanding of the culture of the region, this is an important book. The historical relationships between Iran (Persia) and all the Caucasus States, Georgia and Russia, but more importantly, between the various cultural communities has been brought to life by the author's stories from his life. This is an engaging book, written with a dry wit that leads one to keep reading to see what happens next. I've already recommended it to a Russian working in Silicon Valley who was surprised to find an American who knew what Azerbaijan was, much less one who had an interest in the history.
