After Revolutionary War veteran Tom Mackenzie saves Chief Dragging Canoe's life, he lives with the Cherokee tribe peacefully for seven years. Then, he's informed that President George Washington thinks he's the perfect man for a difficult job: forming the Kentucky territory into a state. Soon, others begin to realize how the settling of Kentucky will affect them: English Loyalists see it as further establishing America as a country. Indians start to recognize the threat white men could pose to their tribes. And the Spanish fear statehood will extend south, allowing America to easily trade with Europe by way of the Mississippi River, so they fan the flame of the Indians' unrest by giving weapons to the indignant tribes. When the US Army fails to provide Tom with soldiers to help him keep the peace, the situation starts to unravel. Despite the disorder, Tom finds a blossoming romance where he least expects it. But in the middle of his new happiness, he clashes with prominent community figures who disagree with his negative views on slavery. Then people take surprising and potentially devastating action.
