Underappreciated Feel-Good Flick
If I had to classify this movie into a genre, I'd struggle to throw it into the cheesy but cute pile of "romantic comedy," which is sort of what it is. It's more like, the first half of it is a comedy, and the second half of it is a drama. So it's a comedy/drama to be exact (the / depicting halves.)
Anyways, regardless of the critics lack of appreciation for this movie, it's a great watch for anyone hoping to crack a smile. It really is. Chris Pike is a adorable and pulls of his role so well as does his brother, hilarious.
What exactly is the movie about? Why were people surprised once they saw this? There are two basic plotlines happening at the same time.
1) Danny, who was born blind, is seeking to undergo a surgery in the brain that has never really been conducted before; but if successful, can give him partial vision to see faces.
2) Danny's 22 and a virgin and is very self-conscious about that. He blames it on being blind. His brother hooks him up on several blind dates (literally) but all of which fail miserably. Little does Danny realize that a blind handsome young man as himself doesn't need to rely on blind dates to meet and fall for decent women. He falls for the secretary of his doctor's office, Leeza, an East Indian woman who is already vowed to be married to someone else.
It's a bit far fetched, to be honest, and has its flaws (like rigidly stereotyping Indian culture!), but it's a movie of laughs and tears, so emotionally, it's a roller coaster ride. Just have fun.
