Seemingly made for profit only and not for any high ideal, Nashville's attempts to do justice to the work of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys is only equal in lack of quality to the Merle Haggard tribute that rolled off the assembly line around the same time West Coast label HighTone Records released the highly acclaimed Tulare Dust project that garnered Hag's approval. So, this independent tribute to the Blasters, the hottest American roots music band to ever come stormin' out of Downey, CA, is a pleasant surprise. And one that has earned a strong thumbs-up from both the man who penned all of the songs included here, Dave Alvin and his older and wilder brother, Phil, who remains the frontman of the current edition of the band. There are 18 great cuts from the likes of the Blacktop Rockets, the Grandsons, the Barn Burners, Lucky 7, Billy Hancock, Josie Kreuzer, Hot Rod Lincoln, and Tom Clifford & the Alvin City Limits,to name just a few. Most impressive is Austin C&W thrush Libbi Bosworth as she redesigns Alvin's tune "Hey Girl" and makes it her own "Hey Boy," with all the strength and power with which it was first written and performed. Also good is "American Music," as performed by the Blacktop Rockets, and the final number, "So Long Baby Goodbye," covered in a most sensitive style by Last Train Home. With so many dedicated artists involved, artists who know, understand, and respect the work of the Blasters and Dave Alvin's songwriting, this tribute is one that not only deserves high praise, but also major airplay worldwide. Displaying the best that American roots music has to offer, Blastered has set a standard which will be difficult for most labels to meet if they continue to turn out tribute CDs for profit only.
