Written by two of the leading explorers in the birdlife of the High Andes, this book sets new standards in this field. The book is illustrated by Jon Fjeldsaa, one of the World's most gifted bird artists, who again has proved his accuracy with the fine plumage details as well as masterly renditions of the general impression and shape. Almost one tenth of the World's nine thousand bird species are illustrated, many of them for the first time. Both males, females, young, and distinct subspecies are shown. The 64 beautifully composed colour plates depict over two thousand plumages. This is supplemented by several hundred line-drawings of the birds. Today this book is regarded as the "bible" in Andean birds and more than 4000 copies have been sold. Birds of the High Andes is published in co-operation with the Zoological Museum, Copenhagen, where one third of the retail price for the books is spent on further investigations in Andean birds. A colour prospectus is available upon request. 64

Seller's Description:
Very Good. Very good hardcover, a touch loose in the binding. Field guide written by Jon Fjeldsa and Niels Krabbe. Illustrated by Fjeldsa, one of the world's most gifted bird artists, who again has proved his accuracy with fine plumage details and master rendition of the general impression and shape. The 64 beautifully composed color plates depict over two thousand plumages and show nearly one thousand species. The book covers the birdlife of the temperate and alpine zones of the Andean region, from Venezuela and Colombia in the north, through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, to the southernmost part of the continent in Chile. For each species there are sections on description, habits, voices, breeding, habitat selection, and range. Detailed distribution maps supplement the text, and several hundred line drawings showing differential details, postures, nests, etc. are spread throughout the text. "I have looked at these plates again and again for a long time now, in the museum and in the field, and find them, as a whole, simply stupendous. All were painted by Fjeldsa 'in water color from field sketches (supported by photos), and with study skins at hand' (p. 52)...It is hard for me to select my favorites among the many beautiful plates."-Francois Vuilleumier, The Auk, Volume 109, Issue 3, 1 July 1992.
