Even if you never make any of the needlepoint projects this book gives instructions for, you may find it worth having for the gorgeous photographs and entertaining text. In addition to photos of the designs there are images of source materials and antique needlework, and the text gives a thoughtful overview of how animals have been used in needlework over time. I'm sure that at the time this book was published (1989) the designs were rather unusual treatments of animals in needlework, and for the most part they have held up stylistically rather well. Readers may take issue with two things: first, the book features a number of designs that instructions and charts are not given for, and second, like many books published around the same time, the charts appear to have been colored with Prismacolor pencils. My biggest complaint is that the gorgeous Medieval pheasant design on the dust jacket is one of the designs no instructions are given for. All in all, I'm glad I was able to find a copy of this book in such fine condition; it's a fine additon to my needlework library.
