A Succinct Summary of Lewis and Clark
Lewis and Clark: Explorers of the New Frontier is one of many documentaries from the Biography series produced by the A and E Network. This concise video does a good job of condensing the events and people involved with the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition in less than fifty minutes. The narrative is supplemented with contemporary paintings as well as images of scenic landscapes encountered by the expedition. We learn about the challenges of the journey up the Missouri River, across the Rockies, and on to the Pacific Ocean. Contacts with Native Americans are also portrayed. While suitable for middle and high school classrooms, the video discusses sexual relations between Native American women and members of the Corps of Discovery. Thus, parents/teachers may want to give children/students advance notice before viewing. Still, I use this video with my eighth grade American history students during my unit on the Louisiana Purchase and have found it to be an effective teaching tool.
