Audie Murphy: Great American Hero is one of many quality documentaries from the Biography series produced by the A and E Television Network. This video is a good overview of the life of Audie Murphy who is one of the most decorated combat soldiers in American military history. Topics covered include his childhood in Texas (including the development of hunting skills which would prove invaluable in World War II), service in Europe during the Second World War, his Hollywood career (including Murphy portraying himself in the movie To Hell and Back, a film based on Murphy's book of the same title), his two marriages, struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and his tragic death at age 45 in a plane crash. Images of the medals he was awarded for combat valor are included in the segment on his combat service; recollections of those who knew him are included. Gives an account of Audie's life, the many trials he went through, the heroism of fighting for his country, and his death.
He truly was a great American Hero, none of the likes we will ever see again.
