Des Autors Worte in seiner Subscriptions-Einladung, welche dieses Werk sein gelungenstes, vollendetstes nennen, dursen uns bei dessen Beurtheilung nicht beeirren, vielmehr dars man darin einen offenen Widerspruch mit seiner Selbstkritik erkennen, die er in dem eben citirten Satze an Zelter uber sein Werk ausspricht. Um diesen bei jedesmaliger Aussuhrung der Wss neu erweckten Streit zu beseitigen, ware rathsam, nach Analogie bei dramatischen Werken der grossten Componisten, selbst bei Haendel's Oratorien, die mit Grund anstossige dramatische Episode aus dem Don zu streichen und somit dem Ganzen zu nutzen. Fallt es auch nicht leicht in diesem breiten, und dennoch getheilten Strome eine passende Fuhrt zum Ueberaang auszusinden, so lasst sich dies mit Ausgeben einiger schonen Stellen doch bewerkstelligen: wenn man nach dem 2ten Tacte ans Pag. 252 der Partitur zu dem ersten Tact aus Pag. 289 ubergeht, wo der volle Chor und das Orchester im herrschenden II aur eintreten und der Satz zu Ende gesuhrt wird.
