A.M. Sixty doesn't catch as many bossa nova breezes as Chris Root's other band, the Mosquitos, and it doesn't have the luscious vocals of that group's Juju Stulbach. A.M. Sixty doesn't catch as many bossa nova breezes as Chris Root's other band, the Mosquitos, and it doesn't have the luscious vocals of that group's Juju Stulbach. But Big as the Sky is as ridiculously catchy, and happily simplistic. A.M. Sixty actually predates the Mosquitos project by a couple of years. In 2001 Root sent the demos to a tiny British label on a whim; they caused a stir, and soon Sixty's fragile little ditty "Just a Dream" was a hit. Was it the song's easygoing guitar riff, or heartwarming lyrics like "When I'm with you/Life is too good to be true"? Who knows, but A.M. Sixty made England's cloudy skies clear, and also had success in Japan. It took until 2004 for Big as the Sky to land in the U.S. via V2, but pop fans will find the wait well worth it. Root's vocals are endearingly amateurish throughout the album, and his assembled little songs latch onto indie pop, daydreams, and lullabies. There's sunny '60s pop in this Sky, and just a taste of that Mosquitos bossa nova on "Melodic Flow." "We Belong Together" is about spending time with your main squeeze on the beach; its female harmonies are a nice touch, giving the song a pleasantly Ivy-ish quality. "Big as the Sky" is equally whimsical, with its rudimentary drum machine beat and quirky sax fills. "She Follows the Sun" turns on a chiming Hollies guitar line, and "Your Stuff, My House" is a sweetly sad breakup song in the wistful tradition of twee pop. With its larkish outlook on life ("I dedicated my life to her tan lines," goes "Summertime Girlfriend"), contented pop sounds, and touches of sardonic wit (stick around for the fun hip-hop bonus track), A.M. Sixty's Big as the Sky is the sonic approximation of the sun on your face. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
