Not illustrated. 1912 Excerpt: ...the curvature of the inside of the spoke the hurtful effect is reduced to a minimum and the spoke has the greatest possible strength. Although the form of the hole may appear to be a matter of trifling importance, such is not the case. The tightened spoke is under a severe strain, which is vastly increased by the shocks and jars due to riding. The strength of the spoke is greatly reduced by the right angle bend made in it, the loss being directly propor Fig. 24.--Repairing a Split Wood Pirn tioned to the radius of curvature. When this radius is reduced to practically nothing, as on the inside curve in the first drawing, the maximum loss is apparent. This loss decreases as the radius increases until the full strength of the spoke is attained when it is extended in a straight line. It would be time well spent if the repairer would bore several holes of different forms, insert wires and ascertain for himself the strength of each wire by noting the power required to pull it apart. Repairing a Split Wood Rim A wood rim is often split for (i to 8 inches, and very few riders or repair men ever attempt a repair, even a temporary one. A very good way to fix a rim so it may be used till a new one can be procured is to get a strip of tin 1 or 1% inches wide, and long enough to wrap around the rim the whole length of the split; then take the tire off and wrap the strip around the rim and between the spokes, pulling it as tightly as possible and fastening the ends with some short, broad headed tacks, such as 3-ounce. Then with a hammer bend the tin down until it fits in the curve of the rim, as shown in Fig. 24. This draws the split parts together. If glue is run into the split first it will help to make a firm joint. A simple repair is illustrated in Fig. 25. Take a 5-...
