Emergency room nurse Carrie Hernandez was amazed at the lengths her roommate, Renee Johnson, would go to get her hands on Karl Hood's newest book. She was even more shocked when Renee turned violent and tried to kill her only hours after the start of reading it. When Renee died unexplainably from the infection, Carrie could only wonder when she would become symptomatic. Realizing she was somehow immune, she did what she could to help the others who were ill.
