This one-volume edition of Shuck's labors gives an historical view of the judiciary system in California by providing numerous detailed biographies including Edward D. Baker, Hall McAllister, John R. Felton, Lorenzo Sawyer, John T. Doyle, Stephen J. Field, Henry E. Highton, S. C. Hastings, David S. Terry, Ogden Hoffman, and a host of others. This copy of Shuck's work includes a Presentation Inscription, Signed by Henry E. Highton to John Swett: "To my excellent friend, John Swett, with kindest regards from, Henry E. Highton. Feb. 21/91." John Swett was a key early educator in California and in 1862 was elected to the post of State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Henry E. Highton (Shuck provides an entire chapter on Highton in this book) was a prominent San Francisco attorney, best known for his brilliant defense in the murder trial of Milton Kalloch, son of San Francisco Mayor Isaac Kalloch. Laid into this copy is a portion of a printed and manuscript document signed by Shuck as Notary Public, 1878. [Cowan: p. 585; Rocq: 17141].
