From their own recovery, the authors discovered that the best way to change ourselves is to change our image of God. Recovery is then rooted in finding a healthier, more authentic way of belonging. Pointing the way to new depths of hope and personal resources of inner healing, the Linns' honest, generous and intimate sharing is at times painful, but always liberating.

The wisdom and usefulness of the Twelve Steps of AA is indisputable. They can be applied to much more than alcoholism. The Linns go so far as to say that every human is suffering from addiction of some sort. Addictions are the symptoms of alienation from our true selves. When we forget who we are and whose we are, we slip into the jaws of the trap of compulsive behavior that is ultimately self-destructive.
How can we be escape? Not by beating oneself up and struggling to force change, but by re-connecting with oneself, one's God, and one's community. Ultimately, only love can heal.
The Linns have decades of experience and education behind them. They are not your average Catholic retreat team. Matthew and Dennis were brothers who joined the Jesuits and became priests. Sheila was a Jew who recognized Christ as the Messiah. Sheila and Dennis were best friends for seven years as they worked together to bring healing to fellow Christians. Dennis left holy orders and married Sheila. The three of them are still working together. Most of what they offer in this book is drawn from their own stories.
I have read this book four times, and am buying copies for others. It is particularly relevant to people who have gotten stuck in their Twelve Step program.
If life is humdrum, it's time to go deeper, and release the choked voices which are buried under the rubble of good intentions. This book can help you do that.
