Originating in the Middle East and North Africa, the ancient art form of belly dancing has been practiced by women for thousands of years. Utilizing sensual and graceful movements of the hips, abdomen, and arms, the dance was once performed as entertainment for royalty and was also linked to femininity and fertility. In addition to the beauty of the dance, however, come the added benefits of flexibility and overall fitness. The Bellydance series offers a wonderful introduction to belly dancing as a form of exercise. Instructors Veena Bidasha and her sister Neena Bidasha have practiced belly dancing since childhood and have traveled throughout the Middle East and India to perform and develop their techniques. They lead the participant through simple routines that are designed to teach the fundamentals of belly dancing while being fun and invigorating. Bellydance Fitness for Beginners: Arms and Abs builds on the techniques learned in the Basic Moves program to produce an effective workout for the upper body and the abdomen. The accompanying soundtrack of Middle Eastern rhythms provides an invigorating backdrop to the workout that strengthens the abdominal muscles and tones the upper body and arms with graceful, flowing movements. The title here says only "Arms and Abs" but the DVD version of this workout by Veena and Neena includes both half-hour segments from the earlier VHS versions, "Arms & Abs," and "Hips, Buns, & Thighs." This was the first belly dance workout that I ever attempted, and I believe it was a very good starting place. Rather than leaping into a cardio workout that is necessarily preoccupied with getting the heart rate up, this strength workout is an ideal format for learning the muscle contractions behind many familiar belly dance moves. Indeed, this is the entire purpose of the DVD. The Arms and Abs section uses flowing movements to strengthen and tone the arms, and I imagine that once a person becomes good at keeping her arms up for the duration of the segment it would be quite simple to add wrist weights in order to further challenge herself. As for abs, these are worked on the floor, using traditional gym style exercises, some with a uniquely eastern style layered on. The twins lead stretches at the conclusion of the half hour. The hips, buns, and thighs segment warms up slowly with some familiar moves like genie lunges, and moves into instruction in hip lifts and drops, carefully illustrating the gluteal isolations that drive these movements. During these parts I indeed felt my heart rate rise, but it's not for a significant length of time so this should not be considered a cardio section. There is also some floor work that has a fresh take on leg lifts, followed by genie sits that seriously work the quads. Once again the twins are careful to lead stretches of the parts they just taxed. The viewer can either play the entire DVD for an hour long strength session, or play only one half to work either section of the body. Each segment is followed by an impressive dance performance by one of the twins. This is a good option to break up the monotony of regular strength training, although it really doesn't include anything for the back or pectoral muscles.
