Incredibly Useful
This DVD manages to be two things at once: it is an instructional video as well as a workout. There are 2 hours and twenty minutes of instruction in all of the basics, but you don't have to block out that much time in order to do the workout. The warmup is designed to be paired with the 5 practice combinations at the end for a moderate all over cardio workout. In between is massive quantities of crystal clear, top notch instruction.
First of all, Jenna does some of the best cueing I've seen in the combinations, and her explanations are clear and precise. She practically refuses to let you get lost during the workout if you've learned the basics from the instructional sections. Many sections are done with her facing the mirror, so she can be seen from both the front and the back.
What I appreciate about this DVD is that she really designs the 30 minute workout to use ONLY belly dance steps. It is the least repetitive belly dance cardio workout I own, because this one requires a little knowledge of traveling steps and asks you to layer them over upper and lower body isolations, undulations, bumps, slides, lifts, drops, etc. The result is that when I tried this last year I could barely follow along. In the intervening months I have learned more and become much more coordinated, and while I am still not perfect at these combinations, I can actually keep up now. It's great to have something that challenges my coordination as well as my heart rate. It should be reiterated that this is a moderate workout that will leave you invigorated and maybe sweating just a little, not an intense one that will leave you panting and exhausted.
