thoughtful, biblical reflection on chronic illness
Marva Dawn is a theologian and a person who has spent much of her life living with a range of debilitating physical conditions. This book is an incredibly honest and detailed reflection on the many facets of loss arising from chronic illness and disability, often illustrated with stories from her own or friends lives, paired with hard won and encouraging insights about how to think and act in the face of these losses so as not to be consumed by them. The book is broken up into short, relatively self contained chapters, each starting with a biblical lament, and closing in a classic prayer, which makes it easy to read in bites, or selectively, rather than feel the need to read it through. It is relatively heavy going, not fluffy kitten, kitchen calendar stuff; but I know that it is a book that I will keep going back to. Highly recommended.
