This book is a collection of travel essays written during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Naturally, the more than half century old information is of limited use to a traveller, and of no use to someone on holiday. It may interest readers with some curiosity about how things were long before the age of jet travel and major tourist development. Occasional small details are fascinating. Oakley traveled with her husband, whom she refers to as her "illustrator" in her sometimes overly precious prose. In passing, though, she will refer to persons of historical significance. On Dominica, she describes a conversation with Stephen Haweis. In her discussion of Dominica, it becomes clear that not much has changed there. Things in Jamaica have changed greatly, but the uglier aspects of that lovely island seem to have been present even in those distant days.
