This memoir is amazing treasure. Written in his old age, Charles Tyng recalls the details of his early childhood, participating in neighborhood efforts to thwart a British invasion during the War of 1812, and then records adventure after adventure as he rose through the ranks of an American sailor. I found his descriptions of his port calls in China, Europe, and the Caribbean compelling. (Far less detailed is his description of his family life -- wonder what that was like!) The notes are very helpful for the landlubber and the biographical material provides useful contextual material. We are blessed that his family saved this manuscript, and that his descendants have made it available to all of us.
