Under Giulini's tender hands, the Missa Solemnis is above all else a lyrical work, a work where every line sings and every instrument is a voice. One gets the sense that Giulini loves every note and every musician and every moment of the performance, and his affection transforms his Missa Solemnis into a festival of love. This is, of course, a good thing and pretty much what Beethoven was driving at when he said of the Missa Solemnis that it "comes from the heart," but love is not all there is to the work. And while Giulini's Missa Solemnis has a lot of heart, it doesn't have much else going for it.
