Interesting memoir of a victim of child abuse. One could consider it an expose of child welfare systems' malfeasance. Rather than making the effort to ascertain family issues, the system takes the word of the parents, unless one of the parents objects. In her book, the young woman describes several of her fellow 'patients' and their treatment at a mid-west mental institution. Though the book does not say it, the big problem is lack of funds, funds to adequately research the family issues, funds to hire people who really care, and funds to train people. Ms. Michener points out in her book that treatment may exacerbate if not create the mental condition of those placed in mental institutions, especially children who are fed drugs while they are growing.
