Based on a curated exhibition
This book contains photos from a 1970 exhibit of photographs at MIT which was curated by Minor White. There are some still familiar names seen here (Imogen Cunningham, Duane Michels, Gary Cox), along with less well remembered 60's photogs, and some interesting shots of be-ing without clothes -- as Mr. White says, neither nude nor naked. The pictures are what I would call typical 60's style, some experimental, many looking ahead to perspectives that would become more common in the 70's and later. All the photos are printed in a noticeably dark register -- apparently an aesthetic imposed uniformly on all of the prints, and which I find rather mannered and unattractive. However, it is important to realize that while White curated the exhibit there is NOT A SINGLE PHOTO BY MINOR WHITE IN THIS BOOK. This wasn't clear to me when I ordered the book -- I don't regret buying it, but don't buy it looking for Minor Whites own work!
