The Cajun coast of Louisiana is home to a way of life as unique, complex, and beautiful as the terrain itself. As award-winning travel writer Mike Tidwell journeys through the bayou, he introduces us to the food and the language, the shrimp fisherman, the Houma Indians, and the rich cultural history that makes it unlike any other place in the world. But seeing the skeletons of oak trees killed by the salinity of the groundwater, and whole cemeteries sinking into swampland and out of sight, Tidwell also explains why each introduction may be a farewell--as the storied Louisiana coast steadily erodes into the Gulf of Mexico. Part travelogue, part environmental expos???, Bayou Farewell is the richly evocative chronicle of the author's travels through a world that is vanishing before our eyes.

Tildwell takes a unique approach to the issue of coastal erosion. An outsider to the region, he drives to southern Louisiana and embeds himself with the local people, viewing the tragedy of thetragic eradication due to the channelization of the Mississippi and oil-and-gas activity of the coast's centuries-old fishing communities

Very informative.
The book is about the coastal erosion problem in Louisiana. That's where I'm from, and where I've been living my whole life. I knew about it, but had no idea that the problem was this serious. As far as I know...most people here still aren't aware of it.
Many people in South Louisiana who shrimp for a living probably know, because it effects their culture, jobs, futures, and ways of life more directly. Shrimping is a billion dollar industry, and lots of people will loose their jobs.
Also, the more the wetlands are destroyed...the more vulnerable this state will be to severe hurricane damage.
People should realize that places like New Orleans, Metairie, etc... are not the only places in South Louisiana that exist or are worth saving. That's the same mentality that has led to a lot of the problems their experiencing now...especially the ones related to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
I don't like to read---this is the first book I've read in years, but it's definitely worth reading.
