The main section of the first volume shows the cityblocks along Friedrichstrasse designed by Nouvel, Ungers, Pei, Kleihues, Dudler, Sawade, von Gerkan, Kollhoff among others and the famous indoor cycling track by Perrault. These buildings are described and shown in a manner which underscores their unique characteristics, taking the reader for a walk or a metro ride to providing many different vistas of the buildings. Naturally the Bauwelt Berlin Annual 1996 also pays homage to the technological and conceptual innovations now being tested on site in Berlin underwater concrete, the management of incomparably complex construction site logistics, the conveyance of the Kaisersaal on air cushions for example.
