I loved this book! This was the final installment in the Wives of King David series, and I found it was told very well. Mrs. Smith takes a familiar story, imagines herself there, and paints a picture with words. She is a master at historical fiction, and more than that, she is faithful to the text of Scripture and doesn't change the things that are already recorded for us. She fills in the silent spaces between the lines. I think it's especially important to be true to Scripture. Writing Biblical historical narrative calls a writer to a higher standard, and Mrs. Smith achieves it.
I went into this story already familiar with it and the characters from much personal study, reading, and listening to sermons. I think Mrs. Smith presented Bathsheba fairly; not as a seductress, nor a totally innocent woman, either. King David did not force himself on her, nor is there any record of protest in Scripture. I think they both entered into the adulterous affair with their eyes open. They did not foresee the consequences to themselves or those around them, but no one in this situation ever does. Highly recommended!
