Bluebeard's Castle, Bartók's only opera, was written in 1911 but did not receive its premiere until 1918 because it was deemed unperformable. It was rarely performed until after the Second World War, and then only occasionally in the original Hungarian. The first Metropolitan Opera performances were in 1974 and were sung in English.
