This book investigates some of the major barriers that may affect export development of manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia. Although SMEs are a major source of growth and job creation, little is known of how SMEs in developing countries represented in international economy relative to their contribution in national and local economies. This lack of evidence in the literature provides a strong rationale for this study. A review of the literature suggests that many of the problems facing SMEs' efforts to internationalise are known, regarding internal and external factors. An investigation of export development in developing countries therefore should include the broad range of internal and external constraints as the key forces influencing the process. This line of reasoning highlights the role played by managerial perceptions of export barriers in shaping the export development process.
