Barking Up the Wrong Tree by Janice Thompson is the third tale in Gone to the Dog Mysteries. It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series. The author has a casual writing style which makes the story easy to read. Kristin has purchased a home. She has stacks of boxes everywhere. Kristins parents come to town and quickly set her home to rights. Tyler gets to meet Kristins parents and soon finds himself with a paintbrush in his hand. Kristins parents provide plenty of humor. Kristin has a quirky family. It bodes well for Kristin and Tylers relationship that Tyler fits right in. I like Kristins friendly and helpful neighbor. I would love for him to live next to me. The whodunit is unique. Someone has switched out a Sheltie who just took first place in an agility competition. There is a handful of suspects. Kristin and rest of the Lone Star Veterinary gang check out the suspects and ask questions. It is an easy mystery to solve. There might as well be a neon arrow pointed at the guilty party. I enjoyed the reveal. I feel that the story leaned more towards the romance genre than cozy mystery. I wanted a more complex mystery and a smidgen of romance. I like that the books in this series are Christian cozy mysteries. There are some good themes in the story (making snap judgements, helping others, and the importance of following the path God has laid out for you). I like how the crew from the veterinary clinic help others. I think it is wonderful that they donate their time to the local animal shelters. We get to learn about dog breeders. There are reputable dog breeders and there are those who should not be allowed to own a cactus much less an animal. I cringed when reading about the conditions some dogs found themselves in. Barking Up the Wrong Tree is a good time with a dognapped doggo, visiting parents, a kindly neighbor, a Fred Mertz marathon, fishing fun, and a community coming together.

BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE
(BOOK 3 GONE TO THE DOGS MYSTERIES)
by Janice Thompson
A good veterinarian clinic is something that owners of award-winning pets like to have. Remmington is a champion Sheltie who isn't acting like himself. His family takes him to Lone Star Veterinary Clinic to see Dr. Kristin.
Kristin does some tests on the dog and finds out that he is an imposter. The vet clinic staffers name him Fred Mertz, because of personality similarities. Then the race is on to find the real Remmington since he has a big dog show coming up.
This is a nicely done story about pets and the people who love them, the caring people who take care of them, and who would separate a beloved dog from his adoring owners.
There is romance in the wind between Dr. Kristin and Dr. Tyler. They went to veterinary school together, but up until now, didn't make any moves towards a more filling relationship.
I enjoyed the sweet Christian fiction and the air of mystery.
