He worked as a community organizer and practiced as a civil rights attorney before serving three terms in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 with 70 percent of the vote. In the 2008 presidential election, he won 53% of the popular vote and 364 Electoral College votes to become the 44th President of the United States.
