If there is a genre of fiction about gay adolescents--and there is--this is a good book in it genre. It works hard to sound authentic in the language it uses, and one doesn't know how well it succeeds--one needs to show it to a gay adolescent, I suppose. Could the book have been shorter? Yes. Still, on its own terms, it succeeds. Not a threat to Catcher in the Rye, the book about an adolescent to which all other books about adolescents gets compared. And the reason, really, is that one doesn't feel inside a very interesting or thoughtful character. Holden Caulfield may not have been a great thinker, but one felt that there was a sentient being inside him, who was learning about people and reacting in logical ways. Band Fags is storytelling rather than character revelation. As such, it's good, so this is not a disparaging review. Take it on its own terms, and Band Fags can be a fun read. I might even reread it some day. It didn't go into my recycle bin. It has an appealing sincerity about it.
