In the first major English biography of Honore de Balzac in over 50 years, Graham Robb has produced a compelling portrait of the great French novelist whose powers of creation were matched only by his self-destructive tendencies. Robb presents Balzac as a man whose influence both in and outside his native France has been, and is still, immense.

This is an authoratitive study of one of France's greatest prose authors. Robb (who wrote a very good book on Victor Hugo) is not at his best here, overcomplicating the life story with amateur psychology and leaving us with a weak impression of the hero. Yet if you are interested in Balzac (and you should be) and do not read French sufficiently well to tackle a biography in that language, this is perfectly adequate.
