A Pleasing Singer Too Often Overlooked
June Christy began as a band singer for Stan Kenton, then made several albums on her own with stunning orchestral arrangements by Pete Rugolo who was also with Mr. Kenton. This is a re-release of two of her albums on one CD. Other singers may have had stronger voices and greater fame but nobody does a ballad better than she and she also swings on occasion in spite of her own disclaimer of the fact. There are standards here and off-the-beaten- path numbers from the American Songbook era. You get twenty-four songs like 'It's So Peaceful in the Country', 'When Sunny Gets Blue' and the great tune 'Lazy Afternoon'.
