Having completed the entire Kate Shugak series, (20 books, to my knowledge), during this past year; I have to say I enjoyed the ride; every installment of it. I think this series would make an excellent movie franchise or TV show; (if Hollywood could refrain from screwing it up. I mean, could the corporate bean counters accept a Native Alaskan woman in a starring role, or someone playing that part?)
Author Dana Stabenow deserves a lot of credit for dishing up the characterizations, (of both the Alaskan bush and the people in her fictional cast.) The sign, to me, of a great novelist; is the ability to make the imagery come to life, mentally. For the modern city-dweller or suburbanite life in the wild is something that can only be imagined, (unless you count being in a deserted part of town at midnight.)
I spent a lot of time wondering if I would ever have what it takes to survive in a place where my nearest neighbor is twenty miles away. I would like to think I could. Who hasn?t dreamed of getting away from it all? (However, the extreme cold of Alaska may be too much of a challenge, if you haven?t lived in that environment before). I think I?ll just wait for the next Dana Stabenow book, (and watch the next installment of Buying Alaska, where they usually only show the houses for sale during the summer).

Stabenow provides ample descriptions of the Alaska outback in this mystery. At the same time she alludes to attitudes of Alaskans toward anyone they consider outsiders. Weaving a Romeo and Juliet plot with a feud similar to the Hatfield and McCoys the author provides an exciting read for mystery lovers.
