The textile industry as many other industries in Egypt produces wastes. The excess dye residues discharged into industry effluents are among the hazard wastes generated in this industry. These wastes need to be removed to reduce the environmental stress. The mineralization of azo dyes are difficult under aerobic conditions. The biodegradation of these dyes requires very specific bioremediation conditions particularly to initiate the biodegradation process. Two steps are involved in this process. The first step is the reduction of azo bond under anaerobic and/or anoxic conditions. The second step is the mineralization of the intermediates under aerobic conditions. This can help in developing bioremediation technologies for the treatment of wastewater containing textile dyes contaminates. The aim of this study is to identify several indigenous microbes potent in azo dye biodegradation and to better understand the conditions necessary to enhance the biodegradation process.
