In the fifties New Yorkers, if any way possible, would get out of town for two weeks' vacation in the summer time, by those in moderate circumstances, while the wealthy would stay away the months of July and August. It was only the extreme rich who could afford a country place in the summer and a four-story brown stone house in the city for their winter home. The latter had elegant places on the east bank of the Hudson River as far up as Garrisons, also grand places at Newport. Many were on Long Island, Staten Island, and on the East River from Astoria to Throggs Neck, and on the Sound at New Rochelle, where the Iselin family and Lelands had grand mansions.
