Back to Back Hits features five songs each from silky voiced Lou Rawls and the under-appreciated Jean Carne. Both sets of tracks are '70s vintage drawn from the archives of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's influential Philadelphia International label. Rawls' biggest hit for the label ("You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine") is nowhere to be found, but the five tracks are fine smooth soul and his cover of Paul Davis' soft rock classic "I Go Crazy" is nice. Carne's tracks show off her conversational vocal style and are coated in the finest Gamble/Huff strings and gentle funk beats. Her only near-hit for the label ("Free Love") is omitted as well. Anyone who wants to hear either artist's work from the '70s would most likely feel cheated to miss the only songs they might recognize. Anyone who really wants to find out what Rawls and Carne are all about should be looking for more comprehensive collections anyway. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
