This book reads like a textbook, relating notable Bach compositions to his theology. It is not a "light" read, and will be enjoyed most by those who are largely familiar with Bach's compositional output and who have some fluency in German. The latter is not a requirement, but will help the reader derive greater pleasure from the lyrics of Bach's religious music, since Dr. Pelikan renders them 1st in German, followed by an English translation. The author aims to show how Bach was influenced by theologians of his time (Lutheran, Catholic or otherwise) and how he assimilated and reformulated these influences to express his own faith. For Bach novices like me, the reader will benefit from reading some chapters more than once.
