I started this book in the airport; my flight was delayed, so I was able to get about a hundred pages into Ava before takeoff--a moment which always produces in me a thrill of panic and the recollection that airplanes are most likely to crash during landing and takeoff. As the plane leaves the earth I invariably contemplate and dread my own death: but reading Ava is such a beautiful experience that I looked up from my book and thought, "Dying right now would be OK."
Ava is an example of a successful experiment. The novel is constructed musically, around the notions of repetition and interval, and at 50,000 feet I was actually tapping my feet. Like music, the book has remained with me for a long time. Now as I race up the rain-wet steps from subway to city I cannot NOT think: "He bounded up the sea-soaked steps" (a repeating line in Maso's song). I can't recall reading a more beautifully constructed and evocative novel.
